The Southern Fork

May 5, 2016

The day starts early at Fresh Future Farm in North Charleston, SC. There is always some weeding before it gets too hot, the basil needs to be harvested, the corn watered, and director Germaine Jenkins probably needs to make another batch of lemongrass tea for the store. Then there are the volunteers to organize, new grocery barcodes to enter into the computer, and she always has an idea for the next workshop or class she’d like to hold. Fresh Future Farm is a bustling plot with a reach much bigger than its slightly-less-than-an-acre footprint.

It’s an oasis, a bright sunny spot of hope in a food desert, and that hope is blooming directly from the heart of its director. But in her mind this project years in the making is just getting started, and growing bananas are just the beginning.
